I want to get a job but I suck at managing my time?

I’m in 10th grade and I’m unemployed. My grades are pretty lackluster, but I get by and I plan to graduate. When I get home, I sleep for a few hours and then procrastinate really bad, and end up finishing my homework around 3am. I want to get a job to pay for equipment for playing in my band, and for other stuff, but I can’t see that lasting very long considering how bad I am at managing my time, and how it will cause me to be even more tired when I get home. If anyone has any suggestions to manage my time better, while holding a part-time job and keeping procrastination to a minimum (real suggestions, not “stop being lazy”), please tell me. Thanks

You end up going to bed at 3 am. Getting up early and going to school. When you get home you are exhausted b/c you did not get much sleep so you crash out for a few hours. Then you wake up – wired – can’t go to bed at a reasonable hour and the cycle repeats itself. Your grades suck b/c you are tired in school and your doing your homework past midnight. As a growing teen – you need more than 8 hours of sleep per night. 8 hours should be a minimum for you.

You need to get your sleep cycle right. Go to be no later than 10 and then get up at a reasonable hour.

However, if your sleep cycle has been off for a while – it may be hard to change it on your own. You may need to speak with your Dr about a medication to help you regulate your sleep cycle. You should only need something for a few months .

I was an insomniac for 10 years. It got so bad sometimes I had to call in to work. Started in college – I like to study late. I finally spoke to my Dr and he put me on a mild anti-depressant for a few months on very low dose. One of the side affects of the anti-depressant was it regulated sleep cycles.

Not getting enough sleep is serious. It can have adverse affects on your health. And is probably one of the reasons for your low grades. Someone operating a car while tired is every bit as dangerous as someone operating a car while drunk.

Once you start going to bed at a reasonable hour- you should have more energy during the day and be able to do your homework in the afternoon. You may want to try to work only one or two evenings a week and weekends. That way – your job will not interfere with your school work.
