What to say to a fun-killing grandma?
My daughter (3 1/2) is attending vacation bible school this week and made friends with sweet little boy there, I think he’s 4. Every day she finds him so they can dance together during the sing-a-long and they sit together during lessons. The problem is the grandmother, who is volunteering and is present the entire time, interupts them every time they start having fun (examples: dancing during the songs, climbing playground equipment while the youngsters are allowed to be on playground, stopping them from hugging or holding hands, etc.). What the kids are doing isn’t against any of my rules, I recognize that VBS is a time for kids to enjoy church and their peers, plus learn about Jesus. Grandma seems to think it’s a strict “school” atmosphere.

I think that it’s hard for the some of our elders “aka” the older generation, to understand that the gender gap is shrinking. It’s not so black and white any longer. Years ago, boys and girls were expected to maintain a certain role within society. -The girls were in dresses and played with other girls, the boys were out picking tad poles outta ponds and sticking them in their ears.
She just comes from a different era and could really benefit from a conversation with you. Just mention how great youth is, that we can be so blind when we are young to the differences between us. How free being a child really is, and how that joy tends to dissipate when we age. Hopefully she’ll open her eyes and understand that their relationship is about FUN and has nothing to do with their gender.
If not, maybe you can set up a play-date with the other Mom, since they have such a great connection!
