I teach preschoolers and one boy, 4, continually “humps” things…in front of everyone! Should I be concerned?
I teach preschool kids and one boy in particular (age 4) continually “humps” things. The floor, chairs, his naptime cot, even playground equipment! He shows no shame and even has problems stopping himself after he’s been told to. The other kids are starting to notice and it’s becoming a habitual problem.
What would cause a young boy to have such an obsession with this? My first concern is molestation, but I don’t know. I even saw him humping his mom’s leg when she dropped him off one day and she acted like nothing was wrong! It’s really creeping me out.
Actually, this is a very common problem, though it’s usually occurring with 2-3 year olds, not 4 year olds.
When he goes to “hump” anything, distract him as soon as possible, I’m presuming it is his way of exploring himself (yes, children that age do “explore”, so to speak), although you shouldn’t tell him it’s wrong, you can distract him by getting him involved in another activity, asking you to help put something away, count numbers 1-10 and point to something different for each number.
Usually, in sexual abuse cases there are other “signs”, such as the child “holding” their private parts or in extreme cases, touching other children in an inappropriate manner.
You may also want to explain it to your supervisor / the head teacher, just so it is on record in case there are any future cases of abuse regarding the child.
