switch hitting/slapping help…?
I am dominantly right handed and I bat righty. I have a very high on base and batting average and I guess I am pretty fast, too. I led off for highschool softball two years in a row and i have been the third hitter for my entire travel career. Now, my travel coach wants me to learn how to slap and hit lefty.
I set up my Hit-a-way today and i did alright hitting lefty. But it felt awkward and dont think i have the right technique. My hips arent getting squared to the front but I’m hitting the ball solid. My arms can’t finish the swing right and I’m not turning my back foot as much as when i bat righty.
So i tried slapping. ok so slapping with a hit-a-way is possibly the hardest thing ever. but i was going through the motion and i felt like a fish out of water.
So…..
How do i fix the things when i bat lefty and fix my technique for slapping??
SO I completely understand what you’re going through! I play in college and I am right handed but I was switched to be a slapper after my junior year of high school. It was so hard. BUT it completely got me my scholarship, so just work really hard. The best thing to do to start is use a tee, a hit-a-way is impossible to slap off of and learn the right technique. I can give you a few basic tips to start out:
Keep your hands UP about ear level when starting and don’t drop them, instead follow through the ball finishing your hands toward the 5-6 hole (shortstop and third base)
Put cones or something behind you while your running at the tee to make sure you’re running AT the pitcher and not peeling out toward first base
ALWAYS keep your hands INSIDE the ball, between your body and the ball, whether its an inside pitch or outside you shhould hit it to the 5-6 hole and you can do that by inside-outting the ball by keeping your hands inside
