Swing Set Ground Cover
Best ground cover for backyard playground area?
I am going to be installing a swing set/slide/etc. in my large backyard, which is mainly dirt and weeds. I’d like to put in a nice ground cover, like sawdust or something like that, to provide for a soft landing, as well as to keep the weeds from growing. I’d like it to be heavy enough so that it won’t blow away in the wind. Any suggestions? Please speak in easy-to-understand terms as DIY projects are not my forte and I might not get the lingo.
Hmmm never heard of rubber mulch before. Low maintenance is good, but I’m estimating a need of 250 sq ft, which will cost at least 500 bucks. At this point, I’m thinking of just using the sand in the backyard that is already there, with a few inches of it on top of a tarp (to prevent weeds).
Rubber mulch is the latest craze, but it ain’t cheap. It is made from recycled tires, and there are different grades. Playground grade is the most expensive… The upside is it doesn’t decompose like natural mulch, so you pay a lot more up front, but don’t have to mess with it every year or two like wood mulch.
if you are going with natural mulch, I’d recommend cedar mulch. It cost a little more than hardwood, but last a lot longer and will repel a lot of insects. If you haven’t bought the swing set yet, I’d also recommend a cedar set, rather than a pressure treated. The chemicals they use in Pressure treated wood are NASTY, you certainly don’t want your kids with their hands all over that stuff.
When it comes to natural mulch remember, the bigger it is, the longer it takes to decay. So nuggets typically outlast chips, which outlast the shredded stuff
You could go with mulch, sand, pinestraw, grass, ect..
It all comes down to how much you want to spend, the look you are going for, and what’s readily available where you live. When i was a kid most of the swing sets sat on top of concrete or asphalt, and most of us survived!!
whatever you end up going with, make sure you use a good quality weedblock underneath, and make it is thick as your budget will allow
