I bought two topsy-turvy with the help of those who have the card with the pole, about $ 50 each. It worked great for me, but all other bag bag upside down planter (strawberries, peppers), I bought a container to collapse at the end of the season. And even fell out of my plants in them until the ripe fruit. So now I have two beautiful plants and very necessary, because I can not find spare tanks on the bench. Do not these things for less than three months … This is our season. I will not buy them again, as beautiful as tomatoes suspended.

Good Idea.
A few years ago, our neighbors gave us a homemade swing set that their kids had outgrown. Our granddaughter was able to use it for a couple of years, until I noticed the wood was showing signs of age. I was about to put it to the curb, when I saw a Topsy Turvy ad. I then purchased 8 Topsy Turvy planters, 16 plants (4 small cherry tomatoes, 4 large cherry tomatoes, 4 regular tomatoes, and 4 cucumber), and 4 cubic feet of potting soil.
I put half of the plants in the Topsy Turvy planters, and the other half in normal pots. The spacing of the swing set hooks seemed close to perfect for hanging my 8 Topsy Turvy planters.
During the growing season, I watered and fed all of the plants equally.
RESULTS
Everything (hanging and potted plants) grew well. I did not notice the hanging plants growing any bigger or faster than the potted plants. I did notice three big advantages with the Topsy Turvy system; NO CAGES NEEDED, NO WEEDS, and EASE OF PICKING !
OTHER THOUGHTS
About midway through picking season, I noticed quite a few cherry tomatoes in both systems splitting. After doing some investigation on the Internet, I determined that I may be over-watering. I cut back to about 2-to-3 quarts a day, and that seemed to cure that problem.
At the end of the season, I just cut the plants at the stems, and left the planters hanging. This year, when I went out to salvage the soil, 6 of the planters were in excellent condition, but two of them were deteriorated, I guess from UV light. I am a little surprised the all 8 were not in similar condition.
I plan on adding more this year.

Topsy Planter Tree
I have ordered the Topsy Turvy Planter Tree with the 3 holes after seeing the ad on TV. I started to read some of the reviews while waiting for my order and didn’t think it was going to work because there were so many bad reviews on the product. So I did a little research on the internet on why some people have good results and some don’t. Anyway, I used the information from the people that have gotten good results and applied to my experiment. Just want you to know that I have never planted any kind of vegetables or fruits except for the mint herb that was totally out of control in my yard.
I’ve received my order on May 4 and started to plant my veggies and fruits on May 6. Today is May 22nd, and I’m already seeing a bunch of buds on my tomato, zucchini, cucumber, and it’s only been 2 and a half weeks. The plants were only 3″ or 4″ tall when I planted them. Those things grow like crazy. They have grown ten times bigger in about 2 weeks. I didn’t use any fertilizer because the potting mix was supposed to provide plant food for up to 6 months. It’s amazing. All my plants look very healthy and huge. Can’t wait till I get some veggies and fruits. I’m so excited, and it’s so much fun watching them grow. So far, so good.

Is it really worth it?
I purchased both the Topsy Turvy Tomato and Strawberry planters. I assumed they came with all you needed to get started…They do not..All that you get is the bag and a hook. I also purchased a heavy duty shephards hook to hang the bags on. The first problem I noticed is that the strawberry planter really needs 12 to 24 strawberry plants to make it worthwhile (which you have to buy seeds and grow seperately)then try to shove the tender plants in the little holes – this is not as easy as it looks. I purchased already sprouted plants but did not fill every hole – this is a problem when watering as water and soil pours out of the non-filled holes. The tomato plant only holds 1 plant and to fill the planters with soil you need a huge bag (they hold much more then you think) My last problem was that the bags are sooo heavy you cannot use a shephards hook, my husband even dug a hole put the hook far down inside and covered it…I still did not work…
So unless you want to hang it from your roof (which I do not) you cannot use the bags, they are just too heavy.
I bought my sister-in-law a generic version at Walmart called the Upsie Downsie that comes with seeds, planter, and soil, you take it out of the box and you are ready to go. This one also has a place to plant the upside down plant but also a place in the top to plant as well. It was half the price and you did not have to buy all of the extras.

Alternative to Topsy Turvy…
I was curious about the Topsy Turvy and went to check it out at my local Walmart but I found they didn’t carry it. So I improvised and bought a hanging plastic pot and cut a hole in the bottom about the size of a silver dollar. I bought a Cherry tomato plant and an Early girl tomato plant. I chose these because they are supposed to be good for container planting. In the bottom hole of the pot I put the Early girl plant and filled in with potting soil. I put the Cherry one on top and filled the rest of the way with potting soil. I have had this hanging on my front porch for a little over a week now and it seems to be doing beautifully. I really can’t comment on the Topsy Turvy but if this works out I’ll probably purchase a few more pots.
